A milky body of wonder.
An oracle in the dark.
A shimmering pearl of wisdom.
A companion for every season, every transition, every shape change of the heart.
Our moon, our unconditional guide.
That celestial being planted among the stars. Breathing our oceans. Rocking our tides.
The moon card is a messenger of embodied intuition.
A hand on your low back that says, “you can trust this body, there is wisdom here.”
A soft lift of your chin that says, “have faith, my love, you were made for this journey.”
A voice when you’re lost that whispers, “this way, this way, this way.”
The moon pulls us back down to earth. Back to our terrestrial bodies and our animal senses. Back to our soma. She brings us onto all fours, like the wolves in the image, plugging us into our animal instincts that move us in the direction of survival, opening the sense faculties that scent the right path for us. The moon reminds us to lick, taste, smell, and feel our way through this world… because we can’t always see where we are going.
She casts light in the dark. She brings our intuition alive.
She is both wildly mysterious and graciously predictable.
It doesn’t matter if you’re walking through the bustling city or inside the comfort of your home, she will come out of nowhere, peaking above skyscrapers or through your tiny bathroom window, and remind you that you belong to this ancient world. She will remind you that you, too, are ancient and wild. Made of dirt and water and star shine.
She’s always there, so that when it comes time for you to navigate some unknown territory in life, you remember to look to her, your shepherd in the sky. She, who has guided you and your mother and grandmother, and her grandmother, and all the human grandmothers, and wolf grandmothers, and whale grandmothers, and redwood grandmothers.
Every being who has ever lived on this planet has been guided by our moon.
Evolutionary scientists even theorize that lunar tides played a role in creating the conditions necessary for life. The very first cells pulsed with her tidal rhythm.
And it’s easy to connect these dots because many biological functions mirror the ocean tides. For example, our very respiration is tidal oscillation. Every breath is an ebb and flow, a rising and falling wave of life force. Can you hear it? Your breath singing the ocean’s song?
If these bodies evolved because of the power of the moon, wouldn’t it be wise to turn to her as one of our greatest guides in these changing times? If she helped to shape these brilliant bodies, perhaps we should allow her to (re)shape us in this moment of profound evolution?
What can the moon teach us about change? About grief? About faith?
How might we let the moon guide us through this dark portal of climate collapse and late stage capitalism?
I don’t know if there is a more trustworthy doula for our collective rebirth.
So I’ll keep placing my faith in the moon and in these moonlit bodies.
I’ll keep feeling for her grandmotherly presence on my back and lifting my chin and whispering in my ear. I’ll keep attuning to her ancient beyond ancient wisdom.
Till my time on this earth is finished, I’ll keep watching her dance in the sky.
